One of the more frustrating things about becoming a virtual assistant in finding clients. Where do clients hang out? I asked Tammy Lorette to share how LinkedIn can help you land the ideal virtual assistant client. Plus, she’s got an offer you’ll want to check out! Take it away, Tammy!

Hey, Tammy! Tell me a little bit about you and your business.

My professional background includes 18+ years in virtual/executive/administrative assistance and I have been part of the Virtual assistant world since 2002. I founded My VA Connection and Your Virtual Assistant BFF at my dining room table with a laptop and a mind full of creative ideas and enthusiasm.

 Over the past 20 years, I have gained a reputation for all things related to administrative assistance including word processing, meeting management, minute taking, social media, and project management to name a few.

My current clients range from Virtual Assistants to consultants to life coaches to women in business, and entrepreneurs. I continue to educate myself as the world of working online evolves.

 At home, I am the mother of 4 grown up children, and I know what it means to set goals, to be organized and support those in the online world. I love building relationships and I love the freedom I get working from home. When I have some time off you can find me watching my favorite reality show, hanging out with my family or enjoying a glass of wine with friends.But I will have my phone in my other hand – I am always connected!

The biggest complaint I hear from new virtual assistants is not being able to find clients. How can LinkedIn help with that?

I hear this a lot as well and I always ask them if they have a LinkedIn profile.  It is shocking how many say that they don’t even have one set up. LinkedIn is a professional platform where you can create an account, optimize it to connect with your perfect client, find relevant and professional groups to engage in, share your content/blogs and make connections with people that you WANT to connect with.  

Each time you make a connection, LinkedIn allows you to send your connection a brief message to introduce yourself.  This is GOLD! This is where you get a chance to start a conversation…

Why should virtual assistants use LinkedIn? What are some of the benefits?

There are so many benefits to virtual assistants…
1) LinkedIn is a professional platform where you can update your profile with your experience, your education and your credentials which you can then share with prospective clients.  Instead of sending a resume, send the link to your LinkedIn profile. And you can continuously update this information as things change.

2) You can connect with like-minded people in groups or as connections.  You can be more specific in your search which will allow you to connect with your client avatar - your people!  

3) You can connect with your current clients and ask them for testimonials which will get posted on your profile.  Testimonials are a great tool for marketing your business and services.

4) You can see who is viewing your profile and reach out to them.  This is a great tool to make connections with people that are interested in your services.  When your profile is optimized to reach your clients and they view your profile, this is a great opportunity to reach out to them to make the connection.  Keep it brief and not too salesy though. Just give them a little something that will allow them to reach out to you.

5) You can do a lot of research on LinkedIn - whether it is a certain someone or a company that you want to work with, LinkedIn is a great place to get to know them better when you reach out to them and share a couple points that you have learned.  They will love that you have take the time to show your interest.

6) Share your content as a post or an article.  LinkedIn is a great place to do this. Post daily or consistently.  You can share your blog, add links and add images to create a more visual post and attract more viewers.

Following these benefits consistently will allow you to grow your network quicker and to get more clients.  

What advice can you give someone new to LinkedIn? What should and shouldn’t be in their profile?

My advice is to get on LinkedIn if you are not already.  You need to include the following when you get started and update these as things change:
- a professional photo
- a headline
- a summary
- experience and education

This is a great place to start.  Think about who your ideal client or connection is when you are adding information to these sections.  This will help you to find clients that are interested in your services.

Do not include:
- a picture that is not you or picture with your family or your dog - keep it professional

  • Information that is not relevant to your business - if your education or experience is not valid to the clients you are seeking, leave it out

Think of LinkedIn as a place for your clients to find the best information about YOU and your business!  

Good stuff! LinkedIn is about connecting. Can you give us some tips on how to network like a boss?

These are the tips that I follow consistently to build my network!

  • Post consistently with relevant content for you, your brand and your business.  

  • Keep up to date on your experience and your education.  

  • Do not accept EVERY connection!  Check them out and see if they are a good match first.

  • Send each connection a brief message when you connect.  This is great first step.

  • Find relevant groups that you can engage in.

Engage on LinkedIn just like you would on any social media platform but in a professional way.  This is not Facebook or Instagram so no memes or what you had for dinner. Engage and keep in mind that your ideal client is reading and looking for you!

Do you have favorite tools you use in your business? What are they and how do they make your work easier?

I have many tools that I use in my business.  A few of my favorites are:

  • Google Drive - to keep all my documents organized and to share with other

  • Zoho Social - to schedule my posts

  • Kartra - My favorite platform for email management, sales pages, growing my membership site

  • PicMonkey and Canva - to create so much stuff including my images to post, flyers, postcards, etc.  

  • Unsplash and Pixabay - free stock photos.  I also use these apps on my phone to create a post when I am not at my laptop.  

I like to keep things simple.  I use Gmail and my calendar to schedule all my appointments and events.  I don’t use other systems to keep me organized. I find that they create more work and I just don’t have time for that.  

For anyone struggling with finding the ideal client, what advice do you have for them?

FIND A MENTOR!!!  We all need a mentor or a coach in our life.  Find someone to talk to, to share your vision with, to bounce your ideas off of, to ask questions, to vent, to share your wins or to grow your business! Without this, the virtual world can be very lonely and isolating.  

A coach or mentor can help you - go and find someone today.  Make the investment in YOU!

And my second piece of advice is to figure out who your ideal client is…

  • Where do they hang out?

  • What do they do?

  • How can you help them?

  • What are they looking for?

  • Where do they live?

  • How old are they?

  • How much money do they make?

When you can answer all the questions, you then have a better idea of who you want to work with instead of searching for the wrong clients.  

Running a business can be all-consuming. What do you do to unwind?

Yes, running a business can be a lot of work.  You will work in the background of your business to build it up and you will spend a lot of time doing this but for me - I LOVE it!  Sometimes I unwind by creating a new offer or product or writing a new blog or post.

On a social - no work basis, I spend time with my family or I watch reality shows.  And when I really need to unwind I clean or go for a walk. This year, 2019 I am incorporating my healthy choices in my life and more things that bring me JOY (my word for this year).  Walking and writing will be a big part of this.
